I appreciate that you are working for a shared understanding of racism and agree that systemic racism is perpeturated by policies, practices and procedures that have been created by whites and that benefit whites. Can blacks and browns participate in this process...yes. The Goya CEO and Candace Owens are examples. Although they are not the "owners" of systemic racism, if one participates in the process or work to perpetuate or keep in existence the policies then they are racist. There are also other forms of racism other than systemic. Interpersonal and modern forms of racism can be and are perpetuated by some BIPOC. Racism is like an ugly cancerous tumor that affects us all. If we participate in the behaviors regardless of race, we are racist.

The work of Ibram X. Kendi and others provides a more nuanced, comprehensive understanding of racism. As a psychologist and diversity professional, I have used for decades an Ism Matrix as a framework to explain it. I am always a bit hesitant to say that yes, Blacks can be racist because there is a viseral and emotional reaction that risks white people minimizing or dismissing the fact that structural and systemic racism have been created and sustained by whites. Yet, when we tether racism to skin color and not the behaviors and attitudes, we simplify a complex issue that hurts us all.
