I love how you have framed your approach to making friends across racial lines and perceive it to be attracted to the energy and "brillance" among colleagues and those who share the pursuit of scholarship. I understand the challenge in predominately white settings and would encourage you to continue "doing you" which sounds like it embraces multiracial living that will hopefully lead to more cross-racial friendships even in a predominately white setting.
